rystals aren’t just the things we have in the home because they look pretty, we need to be setting intentions and regularly cleanse the energy, if you’re just leaving them to gather dust and not do anything with them the energy will become dull. So while it is wonderful to have a beautiful collection of crystals if we haven’t programmed them, set intentions with them and giving them a regular cleanse and energy check in then they will not be as wonderful as they could be.

All new crystals should be cleansed straightaway, particularly if you intend to use them for healing. This is because new crystals will have travelled far and been held by any number of people, each leave an energetic trace on the crystal. They will also need cleansing after being used in healing and being held by other people. Crystals absorb and retransmit all energies with which they come into contact. In healing, crystals become receptive to emotional energies. Therefore, it is important to neutralise the crystal, which restores it to its original clarity.

Cleansing your crystal back to a neutral state ensures that accumulated negative energies are not passed on. Set the intention to clear all negative or inappropriate energies.

There are a variety of ways to cleanse our beautiful crystals but not every method is suitable for every crystal, but there are a few methods which can be used on every crystal without affecting the structure of the crystal.

Below are the methods that are not suitable for every crystal:

Water Cleansing

Water cleansing is a very popular way to cleanse crystals as we associate water with washing. Hold the crystal and put it in your hand and out it under running fresh water. Water from a stream or brook is naturally running. You can always cleanse your crystals at the beach by holding them carefully in the sea and allowing the natural waves to cleanse them. In either water method, hold the crystal lightly without dropping it for at least five minutes. Not all crystals are suitable for water cleansing so you should always be sure you can wash your crystals.

When water come into contact with Desert Rose, Halite, Himalayan Salt (Salt Lamps), Malachite, Selenite crystals they can either become damaged or disintegrate so you should avoid water on these crystals.

Earth cleansing

In earth cleansing, you bury your crystal in dry ground. This can be done outside if there is no chance of rain, as you must keep the soil dry. You can use a flowerpot in a dry place. Earth cleansing is a deep cleansing and it is best done for a period of a full month from the full moon to the next new moon, although it can be for a shorter of time for a week if this feels right for you. I would recommend crystals need to be 6 or higher on the MOH’s scale to be earth cleansed.

Sunlight Cleansing

Some crystals enjoy sun cleansing and being placed in a sun beam. Leave your crystals in the sun only for five minutes.

Be careful as sun cleansing is better for the red, orange and yellow crystals and some crystals will fade if left in the sun.

Sunlight cleansing is a popular method as the sun’s prana or life force shines onto the stones.

The sun is the giver of all life and as such, is an extremely powerful energiser for crystals.

The following crystals should not be placed in sunlight; Amegreen, Amethyst, Ametrine, Apophyllite Green, Aquamarine, Auralite23, Celestite, Citrine, Fluorite, Hiddenite, Kunzite, Opal (will dry out), Prasiolite, Rose Quartz, Smoky Quartz, Spirit Quartz, Super Seven, Topaz, Turquoise.

The next cleansing methods are suitable for all crystals:

Smoke Cleansing

To cleanse your crystal with smoke, hold the crystal lightly and move it back and forth through the smoke that rises from burning incense. Sage and Sandalwood are good for clearing energy. Allow five minutes for smoke cleansing.

Brown Rice cleansing

Take a bowl of uncooked brown rice and submerge the crystals in it. These crystals can be left overnight in the brown rice.

Discard the brown rice after cleansing your crystals. Do not eat the rice as it will hold negativity and don’t keep the rice for another cleansing.

Sound Cleansing

You can use sound waves and their vibrations to cleanse your crystals. Hold your crystal near a singing bowl so it can feel the vibrations.

Other percussion instruments like a drum or a triangle will clear your crystal as well. You can also you bells, or a tuning fork and they are excellent to clear crystals. You can also ring a small bell or have a few little bells (finger bells) or Tibetan cymbals (tingshas) to clear your crystals.

Take at least five minutes to clear your crystals with sound.

Moon cleansing

Moon cleansing can be done on the day before, the day of or after the full moon. Your crystals can still be cleansed if it is a cloudy night. If possible, place your crystals outside, however if you are concerned it’s going to rain you can put them on your windowsill.

Flower Petals:

You can bury crystals in a bowl of flower petals. You can use any petals you wish. Keep in mind that flowers also have healing properties of their own and can share that energy with your crystals. For example, Roses are for love or Lavender for healing and relaxation. In general, it doesn’t matter which petals you use. Follow your intuition or just use what you have in your garden or yard.

Now the following are other ways to cleanse your crystals but some require specific training etc:

Reiki Cleansing

For reiki cleansing, hold your crystal carefully between your cupped hands and give it a boost of reiki energy. Better still, place it on an upturned glass so you can cup your hands around the crystals without touching it for reiki cleansing.

Other Crystals

Not every crystal has the ability to do this, however I have listed it since it is a method that you can use. Your crystals can be placed on top of an Amethyst Druze or cluster, a Selenite slab, put in a bag with a tumbled Carnelian, or surrounded by Clear Quartz Points. Keep in mind these crystals mentioned above will need to be cleansed themselves. Also, the crystal you are using as your cleansing crystal (Amethyst, Selenite, etc) should be larger than the one you are trying to cleanse.

I have used the following example as to why the cleansing crystal needs to be bigger. Cup #1 represents your crystal that needs to be cleansed. It is currently full. Cup #2 is your cleansing cup. It is empty, but only half the size of cup #1. You want to pour the "negativity" out of cup #1, but cup #2 can't handle all of it because it is smaller. You would need a larger cup to be able to handle the clearing of the negativity. The same basic concept goes for your cleansing crystal. As you can imagine cup #2 (your cleansing crystal) will eventually need to be cleaned out itself.

Never need cleansing (apparently!)

Some sources say that there are a few crystals that never need to be cleansed. These would include Kyanite, Selenite, Citrine, and Super Seven. In my opinion, all crystals love to be cleansed whether they need it or not. Use your judgment and intuition on what you feel your crystal needs or want.

My personal favourite methods for cleansing my crystals are reiki and the moon, I tend to use reiki for a big cleansing over all of my crystals as I have a huge number some of which I sell and some of which I use for my healing sessions and for readings as well as my own personal collection of crystals.

I tend to use the moon for a smaller number of crystals not because the moon isn’t capable of the cleansing but simply, I haven’t got enough windowsills! Plus, quite often due to the position of my house I often don’t get a glimpse of the moon. In fact, I’ve been known to hang out of windows (would not recommend) or even go for a quick walk just to catch a glimpse of the moon.

Just like our physical bodies and our energy fields our crystals need to be cleansed. And you should also take the time to get to know your crystals, recognise their energies and tune into the crystal’s strengths and weaknesses. When we are aware of this it helps us know what we can use these crystals for, yes crystals have generic uses but, there may be a certain thing this specific crystal can be helpful with. And this is why we should get to know our crystals; we can do this through the process of programming.
