Water and its connection to spirit

Water is the giver of life, it nourishes, rivers which nourish entire countries, wells which supply families from miles away with their water supply. We as beings are made up of a lot of water, babies are made up of 78% of water whereas adults are made up of 65%. This is one of the reasons we are so affected by the moon cycles, the moon controls the waves, so it naturally affects us, particularly our emotions which are linked with water. And when we are emotionally connected or affected by something it is has importance for us spiritually too. For eons human beings have been fascinated with water and have long included it in their scriptures and rituals. Water has the capacity to capture our attention and imagination, cast your mind back to a time where you were watching a lazy river, a stream, the powerful force of a waterfall or the hypnotic sight and sound of a babbling brook. It has the power to capture our attention and bring us to a state of calmness encountered during meditation.

Water has been used in rituals for millennia, and it has long been recognised by indigenous peoples as a symbol of power and life itself. Music from indigenous people in North America have been written and created to celebrate the power and life-giving capacity of water. Even in religious text water was heralded as an element of importance. In the creation story in the Torah and the Bible it states that “God’s spirit moved over the face of the waters” and talks about life forming in the water “Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures”. In the Qur’an it says water is the substance from which God created the human being, and at creation, even God’s throne “was upon water”. In India consider the river Ganges an embodiment of the goddess Ganga. This makes the Ganges River both a symbol of life and a place where one can wash away spiritual impurities, thereby drawing closer to the sacred source of life. And there are many religions which call on use water in their rituals, cleansings, and blessings. In Christianity water is used in baptisms, in Judaism they immerse themselves in water to take a ‘mikveh’ bath. For Muslims they prepare themselves for daily prayer with the practice of wudu using water. Many religions also have identified springs and bodies of water as having healing properties such as the Church of St. Mary of the Spring in Istanbul and Our Lady of Lourdes in France.
Therefore, water has for a long time played an important part in religions, personal and spiritual beliefs as it is an essential part of our creation, healing and survival. But it’s also essential for a whole other sect of people. Empaths, or highly sensitive or intuitive people. Those who are highly sensitive to energies find themselves almost come to life when they are near water, and they feel more refreshed and alive. This is definitely the case for me, when I am near water, I find myself quite drawn to it, a bit like an elephant hunting out the water, except in this case I’m not sniffing it out to drink, I’m sniffing it out to cleanse, to become refreshed. The water is also balancing for empaths, as they go through their day-to-day life absorbing or taking on other people’s energies or worries, they can feel overburdened and unbalanced, they may describe it as not feeling quite right. As they experience the water, they feel themselves come back into alignment, as their chakras begin to flow a bit more freely. Growing up as a child the view from my window gave me the view of the Irish Sea and the Solway Firth, and during times of difficulty I found it incredibly comforting. I miss that view of the sea now, as all I see when I look out of my windows are houses, so whenever I travel back to West Cumbria when I see the view of the sea, I catch my breath. It’s even better if I’m near where I grew up so I can catch that view that captured my heart and imagination from such a young age. Wen I can’t get out to go near water when I most crave it, I often play music that features water in it, like the sound of a babbling brook or rainfall, (I obviously make sure I’ve gone to the toilet before hand because that could become tortuous ha-ha). In times of trouble, I reach for my relief and that relief is water.
Water can even be used in rituals honouring the moon, be it making moon water or use it as part of a cleansing ritual.
Now you may ask what is moon water, well I’m glad you asked. The different phases of the moon can be used in rituals, and they can have a powerful effect due to the moons strong link with our water. It is incredibly refreshing, revitalising and cleansing, physically and spiritually. So, first thing is first:
1. Collect your water and fill it in a container, if you can rainwater, if not tap is honestly fine. If you have a specific intention or goal in mind that you are looking to manifest or release (full moon is for releasing think it’s, come full circle or completion, and new moon is for manifesting, think a new beginning, a fresh start), if you plan to drink the water ensure the water is safe to drink. For this I’d recommend filtered tap water or bottled water. You can opt to leave your jar or whatever container you use uncovered if you wish but using a lid or cover will keep the water clean.
2. Find an area exposed to direct moonlight.
3. Say a prayer or an affirmation to set the intention of your ritual.
4. Look into what sign the moon is under so you can align it with its qualities, but you can also use the star signs elements to support it (earth, air, water, or fire).
5. Use crystals to amplify the energy. Place a crystal on top of the lid crystals such as moonstone, selenite, or clear quartz great. Be very careful with the selenite if that’s what you choose as it can become damaged very easily by water and can disintegrate.
6. Leave the water overnight.
What can I use the moon water for though? I hear you cry, well it’s very versatile.
Ypu can use it for cleansing your home, for watering plants, in a bath, if you have a pod that you would add your washing up liquid to for washing your clothes in the machine use a separate one from your washing up liquid and add you moon water, in your tea, to cleanse your aura, or to cleanse crystals – please check if your crystals can be cleansed with water.

Water also has many health and wellbeing benefits, which I’m sure you know about but its an important one. If you don’t get enough water, it can drastically affect our energy levels and brain functions, mild dehydration has been shown to affect our cognitive abilities. In a study in young women, researchers found that fluid loss of 1.4% after exercise impaired both mood and concentration. It also increased the frequency of headaches. Many members of this same research team conducted a similar study in young men. They found that fluid loss of 1.6% was detrimental to working memory and increased feelings of anxiety and fatigue. As previously mentioned, it can cause headaches, so if you have frequent headaches or migraines consider upping your water intake. We should be taking in at a minimum 2 litres of water a day. Increasing your water intake can help you treat kidney stones as some people develop kidney stones due to either not drinking enough or taking regular bathroom breaks. Water can also aid weight loss, this is due to it increasing your satiety levels (how full you feel) and boost your metabolic rate, which in turn means that you burn more calories. If you suffer from dry skin, you may find an improvement in your skin if you increase your water intake. It can also help you beat tiredness, ideally the first drink of the day should be a glass of water at room temperature, not tea or coffee. And, if you make water your first drink of the day, it helps stave off tiredness better than if you had a coffee, tea, or an energy drink. Water also helps with our performance when we are exercising, so take a drink out with you as it will affect your performance plus you will become dehydrated, opening the door to issues such as headaches and migraines, muscle fatigue and much more.

So, whether you are immersing yourself in the water, you are using it in a ritual, using it to connect to yourself, to cleanse or drink water has an important role to play in your life, and it is has a huge part to play in how you maintain your health and wellbeing.
So now I’ve finished writing this I’m going to grab myself a glass of water, and I’d recommend when you finish this you to do too.
Sending lots of love and light
Marie
